The Only Man Ever to Win an LPGA Tour Event

Believe it or not, there has been one man to win an LPGA Tour event and it’s a name every golf fan should recognize. The man? Sam Snead, owner of the most PGA Tour wins in history (82). Snead received a special invitation to the Royal Poinciana Invitational in 1961 and 1962. The tournament took place at Palm Beach Golf Club on a par-3 course that effectively took away any distance advantage that a male golfer might have, making for a more or less level playing field.

The tournament only lasted two years, but was an official LPGA Tour event. In 1961, the tournament had 24 men and women competing. At that tournament, Snead finished 3rd, behind Dub Pagan and LPGA pro Louise Suggs. In 1962, the format changed, as 14 LPGA Tour players were invited with Sam Snead the only male player. This time, Snead showed his class to beat the competition, with future hall of famer Mickey Wright finishing in second. Thus, Snead is the only man to every win an LPGA Tour event.
