The Wyndham Championship has gained popularity for its annual spot on the PGA Tour schedule as the last regular season tournament before the FedEx Cup Playoffs begin. Players on the bubble of making the playoffs show up to Sedgefield each year hoping to make a big move in the right direction.

Wyndham Championship History

The long history of the Wyndham Championship assures that some of golf’s greatest players, such as Ben Hogan, are counted among the past champions. Byron Nelson is a two-time champion, as well as Billy Casper, while Davis Love III is a three-time winner.

However, all past champions pale to come close to Sam Snead’s record eight wins spanning from his first in 1938 to his last in 1965.

The Wyndham Championship has crowned some notable champions in its history. In 1942, Sam Byrd – a former Major League Baseball player who backed up Babe Ruth for the New York Yankees – won the tournament and is still to this day the only MLB player to win a PGA Tour event.

In 1978, 20-year-old Seve Ballesteros won the event, which was his first tournament in the United States.

Like many tournaments that are approaching their centenary, the Wyndham Championship has held many different names over the years:

  • 2007 - Present: Wyndham Championship
  • 2003-2006: Chrysler Classic of Greensboro
  • 1996-2002: Greater Greensboro Chrysler Classic
  • 1988-1995: KMart Greater Greensboro Open
  • 1938-1987: Greater Greensboro Open

Sedgefield Country Club

The Wyndham Championship returns to the Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina in 2024, where it will be contested for the 17th consecutive year. Sedgefield has helped stage the tournament since its inception as the Greater Greensboro Open in 1938. Sedgefield and Starmount Forest shared hosting duties – co-hosting the event from 1938-1942 and loosely alternating from 1945-1960 – from 1938 to 1960.

After Sedgefield exclusively hosted from 1961-1976, Forest Oaks staged the event for three decades, from 1977 to 2007. Sedgefield has hosted the tournament ever since.

The Sedgefield course was designed by legendary Pinehurst architect Donald Ross, and remains a true test of golf.
