TaylorMade SIM2, SIM2 Max and SIM2 Max D Fairway Woods Review

When the TaylorMade SIM fairway woods were released in 2020, they brought back the brand's patented V Steel technology which was introduced nearly 20 years earlier. The V Steel sole shape – both old and new – raises the toe and the heel so less sole area touches the ground. A swing of a club with a V Steel sole cuts through the grass, even in the rough.

The main drawback of the V Steel sole of the past was the higher CG and more ball spin at impact. The SIM fairway woods remedied this problem by adjusting the weight and lowering the CG for less spin. Further adjustments of the SIM2 fairway woods allow for even more forgiveness and ball speed.

On the new SIM2 Titanium fairway wood, the CG has been lowered to just 12.1mm from the ground thanks to the added 80-gram steel sole weight. Now, the CG is in the center of the face with five percent greater MOI for more forgiveness when compared to the SIM fairway wood from 2020. Expect your shots with the SIM2 to have a higher launch and lower spin.

The SIM2 fairway wood comes with a compact, aerodynamic 170cc head that pulls its inspiration from Tour golfers looking for explosive distance. You'll notice the difference in clubhead size right away when compared to the SIM2 Max and SIM2 Max D fairway woods.

The SIM2 fairway wood is the only of the three to have a ZATECH titanium face. The lightweight, ultra-strong material allows for fast ball speeds, especially when combined with the ultralight carbon crown found on all three of the SIM2 fairway woods.

From above, the three SIM2 fairway woods have a very similar look, but the silver-colored sole plate gives the SIM2 a sleek appearance. Each of the clubs has an eye-catching pattern with blue and yellow accents flanking the V Steel piece on the sole.

Both the SIM2 Max (190cc) and SIM2 Max D (195cc) fairway woods have larger footprints than the SIM2. They both feature a C300 steel clubhead, as opposed to the titanium clubhead on the SIM2. You'll find that the SIM2 Max and Max D have a higher launch and are more forgiving than the SIM2.

The SIM2 Max D fairway wood is designed for a draw in your golf shot. A weight place at the heel encourages a right-to-left ball flight while still providing good forgiveness.

While the three SIM2 fairway wood models differ, they do share plenty of innovative technology.

The SIM2 fairway woods feature a Speed Pocket, as do the SIM fairway woods and many of TaylorMade's other clubs. This pocket allows for more flexibility and consistent ball speed and distance, even on balls struck low on the face.

You'll also find Twist-Face technology, another TaylorMade staple, that provides forgiveness even when the ball is struck outside the center of the club face.

The SIM2, SIM2 Max and SIM2 Max D are each available in 3, 5 and 7 woods.

Reigning Masters champion Dustin Johnson added the SIM2 15.0 fairway wood to his bag two weeks after release and went on to win the Saudi International in early February.
