Number 34 in my 50 State Golf Quest is done here in Virginia. Love Love Love this course. I brought my daughter along to cart me around and tell me when to put more body swing in my backstroke. Made me laugh, but then when I did, I had a better drive. HaHa. The day I played here was pretty busy so I was grouped with 3 other players and had a fantastic day. Meeting them, especially Jim, who would spot for me and give me distance advice, was awesome. Of the 3 days in a row of golf in this area, I played one of my best games here with one chip shot uphill to the green and in the hole; got some cheers from the guys too. Made my week, let me tell you.
Tree lined golf course that is one of the better tracks in Hampton Roads. Greens can get pretty bumpy but that's to be expected with heavy public traffic who don't repair ball marks. It can also be a slop pit after rain as it sits right on a lake. Beautiful wildlife in the area. Probably the best layout of any public course in Hampton Roads.
Walked this course the other day on a Tuesday afternoon. Zero houses, roads or anything to suggest you are in virginia beach. This is a sand based course carved through a pine forest on a nature preserve. Reminds me of the courses you find in the pinehurst area. The condition were ok for a bermuda based course in early April. Not the best but it cost less than $20 to walk in the afternoon and I had the course to myself. Regarding value... I've paid far more for far worse experiences. Course is not extremely difficult but still provides a good layout that penalized bad shots. Overall I was happy and will go back. I'd like to see the course in the summer once the bermuda comes in.
The worst experience we've had at a golf course. The overwieght gentleman behind the counter was rude and disinterested. Won't be back here, ever!
There have been exceptional improvements at this golf course! There are several new staff members including a very talented knowledgeable, and detail oriented Superintendent and a new Golf Pro. The course has never looked better. Play this course and you will be very impressed!
don't be too impressed... its risky to go here, it could be great or down right awful
I golfed 4 courses while in virginia beach with my wife. Stumpy lake was by far in the best condition, and was the best layout. It was the end of a very dry summer and the greens and fairways were in great shape. The staff was fantastic. My wife and I got around the course in less than 4 hours. The ranger was extremly respectful and helpful. He made my wife feel very comfortable with his friendly manner. The course is such a fantastic layout (no homes, no overlapping fairways, no brush in treelines, big greens, fluffy bunkers, great scenery) that many people want to play it. The pace of play was fantastic. Thank You Stumpy Lake for the best round of golf on my vaction.
As a new golfer, i enjoyed this course immensely. Although it poured down rain the night before, the course had almost no standing water and the greens were fast and perfect. All staff treated me and my brother well. The scenery of the course was great. Lots of wildlife. I can see a more experienced golfer thinking this course may be too easy though. It was very forgiving for new golfers. Very few water hazards and even sand bunkers were not much of a threat. Rough was almost as nice as the very wide fairways. Unless you hit into the woods, which required an extremely poor shot, no matter where you landed you were in good shape. As my experience increases, i can see myself looking for more of a challenge. But for now, this is an excellent course for someone of my skill level.
Played weekend of Apr-17-10. Have played here for years, the new greens are in great shape and the new club house is awesome. Irrigation was added last year and will be a big help during the summer. Great open and secluded course for beginners but challenging enough for the regular golfer. Watch out for snakes, deer and bald eagles!
I played Stumpy Lake on 03/07 and found everybody extremely friendly. You can not beat this course for the money. The whole group enjoyed the round.
