Fix Three Common Causes of Low Golf Shots
How Fix Low Golf Shots
Most people who come to our schools do not have a problem with hitting the ball too low but sometimes we do have a person in that category.
- It could be somebody that has very slow swing speed. A slow swing speed will always drive the ball low, you need swing speed to get the ball up in the air and create spin.
- Other people who hit the ball really low are short swingers. Guys or women who take the club back really short back without much wrist action, they will tend to hit the ball low also, low ball hitters.
- Then there are people who drive really hard and have too much lag will hit the ball low.
Lengthen Your Backswing for More Height on Shot
To cure those things the first thing would be speed, I am not going to get into that now, I am going to talk about the person that lags the ball too much or has too short of a backswing. If you have too short of a backswing I want you to focus on the right hand and the right shoulder, for a lefthander it would be the opposite, but I want you to pull the club back. That will get you a longer backswing which will really help you get the ball up in the air.
Watch Your Knee Action for a Better Swing
For the person who lags the club too much, drives the ball into the ground and takes the loft off of the club they usually have too much knee action, they lean on the golf ball this way and really burn out too low, they never get the ball up in the air and can not hold the greens. To stop that takes some work. What I would like you to do is to do some slow motion swings and get the club back to impact where you get right back in line. So you go slow up then right back to impact. You might feel like you have a giant hand on your left cheek that is not allowing you to go ahead of the golf ball. So stay behind it and get the clubhead back in line with the end of the grip. Most of you will have to feel an earlier release. Like Jack Nicklaus said in his books, he released the club right from the top. Now you can feel that if you hit too low. Also, practice off of a tee so that you do not practice driving the clubhead into the ground. Slow swings, get that club back in line so that you can get the ball up in the air. Also, make sure you get enough backswing.
