Why Am I Hitting the Inside of the Golf Ball?

Inside out. Alright, inside out means that we are dropping the club too far to the inside. When we talk about inside, if I take a golf ball and divide it one hemisphere on this side, one hemisphere on that side, I am standing on this side of that black line, this hemisphere, and we call this the inside. As I swing my club will work inside, so you would think that it would be pretty easy to hit back down from the inside.

  • Sometimes though people go too much to the inside, they drop the club down too far behind them, the right shoulder goes down right away to start the downswing, they duck under the ball and they hit too much from the inside and actually hit from in to out.
  • They go across the target line from the inside to the outside, and that makes you push the ball or hit big hooks.

Exaggerate the Over the Top Move to Fix the Inside-Out Swing

To cure that we have to kind of go back to something we would consider a poor move, an over the top move. I might actually have some people take the club a little more inside on the backswing and then loop it over. Get the club more out on the downswing to get them out of this problem quicker. So you have to kind of exaggerate the over the top move in order to stop the inside out move. When you are swinging too much inside out a good player is just dead because they are going to hit one ball way right and the next ball way left. They are just lost, they do not know what is happening, they feel like they made two different swings. One was just a hang on and the other one was a release and the ball goes way to the left, it is one of the worst mistakes you can make.

I would much prefer for the good player to be slightly more over than too much under because that ball will gently fade back to the target. The good player needs to get the club more out on the downswing, actually feel a little loop over the top to get himself back on plane.
