August 2018 - Visiting my niece in Powell and checking off another state in this 50 State Golf Quest I have set for myself. It is a gorgeous course and fun to play. Especially with my sister, niece and little g-nephew joining me. A cordial staff and well maintained challenging course is a reason for me to come back.
I played Powell yesterday and was very pleased with what they had to offer. The front nine is a desert course that offers elevation changes, water, brush, and great views. My favorite holes were the par 3 4th hole which has you teeing off from well above the hole with nothing but water and some harsh rough surrounding the green. The other favorite was the par 5 5th hole which also has an elevated tee into a very forgiving fairway. The back nine was so much more different and difficult if you are not hitting straight from the tees. Every hole is tree lined and tight. You can play your second shot from the parallel fairways that are there. All of the greens were challenging with size and slope differences that will keep you guessing. Most of the greens did have a lot of disease areas but it didn't affect the roll of the ball.I would only recommend more restrooms and some drinking water stations. Slow play was a problem as the twosome in front of me were tremendously slow and thinking that they could hit every green on their second shot so they would wait for the group in front of them to clear. Needless to say they sucked it big time but didn't care about others. Yeah, you know who you are you jackasses.Aside from them, it was a fun course and a challenge.
