TaylorMade Announces Third-Generation P790 Irons

The third generation TaylorMade P790 irons include two significant updates to the previous generation. The SpeedFoam Air is designed to produce better shots overall, while a repositioned sweet spot, which TaylorMade calls an “Intelligent Sweet Spot” should help improve consistency.

The P790 irons fall into the “player’s distance” category and are best suited for mid- to low-handicap golfers. This marks the third generation of the P790 irons. The debut model was released in 2017, with a few tweaks incorporated into the second generation in 2019.

The new P790 irons utilize SpeedFoam Air, a lightweight urethane foam, to redistribute weight lower in the club. The foam resides inside the forged hollow body and saves an average of 3.5g of weight per iron, enabling more weight to be redistributed lower in the head, which in turn lowers the center of gravity.

“SpeedFoam Air is the heartbeat of the new P790 irons,” said Matt Bovee of TaylorMade product creation. “The development of this lightweight urethane material allowed us to strategically reconstruct the iron head to promote optimal launch conditions and a sweet spot that coves the most common strike points on the face.”

If SpeedFoam Air and lower CG are on the technical end of the upgrades for the third generation P790 irons, TaylorMade added some more easy-to-understand technology as well. The TaylorMade development team analyzed data from thousands of shots to map the most common impact points on the iron face. Using those results, developers repositioned the iron’s sweet spot to accommodate the most common impact points, and TaylorMade has seen “measurable upticks in ball speed and distance compared to the prior generation,” according to the company’s press release.

While TaylorMade incorporated some improvements into its latest iteration of the P790 irons, there are several specifications that remain the same from the successful franchise's previous generations. The Thru-Slot Speed Pocket -- which helps retain ball speed, and therefore distance, on shots struck low on the face -- is carried over into the newest release. Up to 31g of tungsten weighting rests inside the iron head where its job is to provide stability and forgiveness.

The P790 irons are offered in 3-PW/AW for as little as $1,399. If you want to add some swagger to your bag, you can opt for the P790 UDI 2-iron, a tour-inspired driving iron, for an extra $249. The 3-iron through PW/AW are available with either True Temper Dynamic Gold steel shafts ($1,399) or Mitsubishi Chemical MMT graphite shafts ($1,599). The UDI comes with the Project X HZRDS Black Smoke shaft.

The third-generation TaylorMade P790 irons add to an already successful franchise of irons. The idea of a sweet spot strategically positioned to the most common impact points across the face should appeal to many golfers. The player’s distance category is appealing to mid- to low-handicap golfers who appreciate some feel and workability in their clubs and also want to squeeze maximum distance out of their swing.
