Power Shift Board Life-Tested Review
Here's how the Power Shift Board helped me improve my swing, and who I think should give it a try
When it comes to golf weight shift boards, there is one unique product that stands out above the rest. It’s called the Power Shift Board, and the thing that makes it different is that it gives audible feedback so you can learn and optimize the precise moment in your swing your weight shifts to your lead leg.
I’ve been using the Power Shift Board in my golf training over the last several weeks, and it’s helped me with the biggest issue that’s plagued my swing and golf game for years, hitting the ball fat.
In this review of the Power Shift Board, I’ll let you know exactly what it is, whether or not it works, and who I recommend it for. Let’s go.
What is the Power Shift Board
Underneath the Power Shift Board there is are springs and a clicking mechanism to give you audible feedback
There are plenty of weight-shift boards in golf. These are essentially a board that you stand on to make swings, which have a fulcrum on the bottom, almost like a see-saw, so you can feel when you shift your weight to your trail foot, and when you shift it to your lead foot.
That’s what the Power Shift Board is, with one huge upgrade. The Power Shift Board makes an audible click when you properly move your weight to the front. This audible feedback allows you to identify the exact moment your weight is loaded on your front foot.
Does the Power Shift Board Work
I can tell you without any doubt that the Power Shift Board has dramatically improved my ball-striking. It guided me to a feeling that’s easy to repeat and leads to much cleaner and more consistent contact.
I’ve struggled with hitting fat shots for a long time, and it didn’t take much time using the Power Shift Board to figure out why.
When I first stepped onto the Power Shift Board, I didn’t hear the click until my swing was basically at impact. Even though I was finishing with a nice balanced finish and my weight on my front foot, that weight shift was happening far too late.
Then I made a few swings where I made sure to hear the click at the top of my swing before rotating my body through the swing. That move opened up the feeling of rotating everything around my front side in the downswing, which was easy for me to translate into swings once I stepped off the board.
The audible click has essentially become my swing thought on full swings. As a result of improved ball-striking, I’ve seen an uptick in distance as well, which is to be expected when you get rid of those frustrating fat shots.
How to Use the Power Shift Board
Golf Training Aids has published a series of brief instructional videos on YouTube on how to use the Power Shift Board, which, if you’re spending over $100 on a training aid, they’re worth checking out for a few minutes. But, the truth is that this is a pretty intuitive training aid to use.
You stand on it in your golf posture and make a swing (I use it without a ball, and often without even a club). The ideal moment to hear the click is the instant before you reach the top of the backswing – as pointed out in the videos – then swing through.
I simply spend a few minutes on it each day making air swings while really emphasizing the feeling of shifting my weight forward as I get to the top. If I’m heading to the driving range or the golf course to play a round, I’ll make 5-10 swings on the Power Shift Board before leaving home, and I’ve had no problem tapping into that feeling on the course.
Who Should Use the Power Shift Board
There are plenty of claims behind the Power Shift Board – as with any golf training aid – which can make it a little confusing when it comes time to decide if it’s a good product for you. I’ll do my best to help with that.
If your biggest problem is hitting the ball fat, or if you know you struggle with the timing of your swing, then I think you could absolutely benefit from training with the Power Shift Board.
The product also claims to teach you to learn to use ground forces to generate power, and improve power and distance. I think that yes, technically those things are true, but if you’re already a good ball-striker with good timing, and you’re simply looking to improve your power, there are better ways to do that. I am hitting the ball noticeably farther, but in addition to some overspeed training I’m doing on the side, I attribute that to the improved ball-striking rather than my new understanding of using ground forces.
It took me way too long to figure out the optimal timing of the golf swing. If you’re a beginner or high-handicapper and you want to build a stronger foundation for your golf swing, I think the Power Shift Board is a great tool to engrain some strong fundamentals that will result in very satisfying ball-striking.
Power Through
When it comes to golf training aids, there are seemingly endless options out there that all promise the world. Like most of the others, the Power Shift Board is not short on promises, but if you’re a golfer who struggles with fat contact, I think you have the most to gain from the Power Shift Board, and I believe it can help you hit much better and more consistent shots.
