It’s hard to count the number of OEMs that announced a new zero torque putter in November 2024, and that includes the king of the category, L.A.B Golf, which announced that the new OZ.1 and OZ.1i will join its lineup of zero torque, Lie Angle Balanced putters in December.

L.A.B collaborated with Adam Scott and listened to the most common critiques from its customers to develop the OZ.1 and OZ.1i putters, which offer features that have never been available in L.A.B putters before.

First, the OZ.1i has a fly-milled stainless steel face insert, making it the first L.A.B putter with an insert. The OZ.1 remains a one-piece, all-aluminum head.

Second, players can choose between a vertical shaft (no built-in shaft lean), which is new to L.A.B Golf, or a 2-degree shaft lean option.

Give the People What They Want

“One of the beauties of engaging directly with the consumer the way that we do on social media is that we get real-time feedback,” L.A.B Golf CEO Sam Hahn told GolfLink. “We've looked at some of the more common criticisms that we've gotten about the stuff that we've made and the top three are they look like crazy weird science fiction putters, so we made a cleaner-looking putter that for the most part was inspired by Adam Scott.”

The half-moon head shape and solid-body construction was Scott’s “brainchild,” according to Hahn. Next, L.A.B addressed consumers’ issues with the built-in shaft-lean that was non-negotiable in L.A.B’s previous offerings.

“The next complaint that we get is around the onset head, shaft lean, and crooked press grip,” Hahn added. “So this one, the way that we engineered it, we can get the shaft close enough to the face that if you don't want to, you don't have to have the forward lean and the press grip on it. You can just have a vertical shaft with your favorite grip that you use.”

The OZ.1 putters also offer an improved sound and feel, thanks in part to the solid-body construction.

“Lastly, the most common complaint that we get is around the sound and feel,” Hahn said. “A lot of people really don't like aluminum. Even beyond aluminum, the actual construction of some of our putters like the Mez, to a lesser extent the DF3, they sort of have reverberation issues with them. So this putter solves for all those issues with the stainless insert and the way that it's constructed without any reverberation chambers. Both the aluminum version and the steel face version sound totally different and much more premium than anything we've ever offered.”
