Our Favorite Golf Divot Tools from $7 to $20
This easy guide explains what a golf divot tool is, how to use it, and which ones to choose from
It’s good golf etiquette to fix more pitch marks than you make on the putting greens, and if everybody did that, we’d all have less to complain about.
If you want to do your part on the putting greens, all it takes is a golf divot tool in your pocket, which can cost anywhere from $7-20 and often serves multiple purposes.
What is a Golf Divot Tool?
A golf divot tool is a tool with a small handle on one end and two pointy prongs on the other. With it, you can quickly and easily flatten the craters you and your playing partners make when you hit an approach shot onto the putting green.
How to Use a Golf Divot Tool
To use a golf divot tool, you start at the back of the pitch mark (sometimes incorrectly referred to as a divot), stick the prongs into the ground at about a 45-degree angle towards the center of the pitch mark, and gently pull the handle towards the middle of the pitch mark.
Work your way around the entire pitch mark then flatten it with your putter.
There is one common mistake you absolutely must avoid when fixing pitch marks. After you put your divot tool into the ground to fix your mark, you should never pull the tool back towards the ground and pry up the damaged turf. Doing so will damage the roots of the grass, which will take much longer to recover than a properly repaired mark.
The whole process should take about 10 seconds, but pitch marks that are repaired properly heal in just a couple days, whereas improperly fixed or ignored pitch marks take a couple weeks to heal.
