Your ball-striking ability might determine your potential as a player, but your putting dictates how much of that potential you actually realize.

If you’re a mid-handicap golfer looking to take your game to the next level, here’s a stat that will put putting into perspective: 15-handicap players three-putt almost four times as often as scratch players do, according to data provided by Shot Scope.

The average 15-handicap player three-putts once every 9.7 holes, almost once per side, while scratch players 3-putt just once every 35.7 holes, about once every other round.

When you let that sink in, you realize that better putting doesn’t necessarily mean making more bombs (although that’s always fun), it’s more about better distance control, leading to more tap-ins and fewer three-putts.

If you’re dedicated to taking your putting to the next level so you can take your game to the next level, it’s worth finding a putter that you can not only line up effectively and roll on your intended line consistently, but one that you can control distance with exceptionally as well.

We’ve tested over 200 putters with all sorts of various features and technologies at GolfLink over the last few years, and these are our eight favorite putters for mid-handicap golfers.

Typical Price: $449
Key Features: Zero torque; sleek half-moon shape

Club Champion – one of the top brand-agnostic club fitters in the country – has sold more LAB putters than any other brand in each of the last two years. In my opinion, that’s plenty of evidence to support LAB’s claims that they’re easy to start on your intended line.

The OZ.1 is LAB’s latest design and offers a few perks that had previously not been available in the LAB lineup. First, you now have the option to get the putter with a stainless steel insert (OZ.1i) or as an all-aluminum head (OZ.1).

LAB also debuted a new vertical shaft option with the OZ.1 putter. LAB putters have always had an angled shaft that puts the golfer’s hands vertically above the face while the shaft intersects the middle of the head. A 2-degree shaft lean is standard. This new vertical shaft option eliminates that shaft lean and allows the putter to pair with a standard grip. Of course, you can still get the OZ.1 with the built-in shaft lean.

I’ve recently begun testing this OZ.1 putter, paying close attention to hitting my start line, and I figured out how to roll it straight pretty quickly. The sound and feel of the all-aluminum OZ.1 head is quite pleasing to my senses as well.

While competitors like PXG, Odyssey, Evnroll and Bettinardi have made a recent push into the zero torque putter category, fueled no doubt by LAB’s success, LAB is still the only one of that bunch that makes nothing but Lie Angle Balanced (LAB), zero torque putters. That means if you’re considering testing the benefits of that category of putter for your own game, your test isn’t complete until you’ve rolled a LAB putter.

Pros:

  • Easy to roll on your intended line
  • Pleasing sound and feel
  • Improved looks for players who haven’t liked previous LAB head shapes

Cons:

  • $449 might be too much for some players to invest in a putter

Typical Price: $199
Key Features: Timeless Anser shape; budget-friendly option

If you’re looking for the classic blade profile without paying Scotty Cameron prices, there’s great news: you don’t have to cut corners on your putter selection.

This 2024 PING Anser 2 is as classic as they come, complete with the milled face and satin finish.

Still, the $199 price is right in the sweet spot for players who are serious about improving yet have no aspirations to join the Tour someday.

With mid toe-hang, this blade is perfect for players with a slight arc in their putting stroke.

Pros:

  • Classic shape that will never go out of style
  • Milled face creates a premium finish
  • Ideal for players with some arc in their stroke

 Cons:

  • 340g head weight is not adjustable for players who prefer a different feel

SHOP ZEBRA
Typical Price: $299
Key Features: Zebra’s classic alignment aid

I had the opportunity to take a deep dive with the new Zebra Milled Series putters, testing the half-moon mallet 001 version, and I have to say this might be one of the most surprising putters I’ve rolled in the last few years. My takeaway? Don’t sleep on Zebra.

If you think Zebra’s comeback is a playful attempt to drum up some nostalgic feels, there’s a lot more under the hood than you’d expect.

Maybe it’s just me, but this Milled Series putter was just one of those putters that I immediately felt comfortable with. I could control the distance with ease from the very beginning, and Zebra’s classic alignment stripes make it easy to align. Of the 10 or so putters I have in my garage at the moment, I prefer the feel at impact with this one over any of the others.

Another thing Zebra nailed with this release is the array of options. There are four head shapes in the Milled Series line, including this mallet (001), fang (002) wide blade (003) and blade (004). Within the lineup, and even within some models, you have toe hang and face-balanced options in both left and right-handed heads, and you can choose from 33-inch, 34-inch or 35-inch shaft length and your grip on top of that.

I certainly think these Milled Series putters are worth their $299 asking price, but that brings in some competition from tour-proven brands, specifically Odyssey’s Ai-ONE lineup (more on that shortly).

Pros:

  • Multiple head shape, length, balance, and grip options available
  • Excellent feel and sound
  • Easy to control distance

Cons:

  • At $299 it’s up against some serious competition

PGA TOUR SUPERSTOREFIND AT AMAZON
Typical Price: $249
Key Features: High MOI and consistent distance across the face

Can you believe we’re creeping up on 20 years since the original TaylorMade Spider dropped? Since 2008, the Spider has been a popular and successful putter for professionals and amateurs alike. It’s even the putter Scottie Scheffler turned to when poor putting was seemingly holding him back from racking up Tour wins, which he’s done plenty of since putting his Spider in the bag.

With an aluminum core and stainless steel perimeter, the Spider is extremely perimeter-weighted, boosting MOI which means the putter resists twisting when struck on the toe or heel. That helps the Spider produce consistent ball speeds across the face.

White and red Spider putters are available in face-balanced (double bend) or a 32-degree toe hang version (slant).

Pros:

  • High MOI design increases forgiveness and consistency
  • Distance control is consistent across the face
  • Toe hang and face-balanced options

Cons:

  • Red or white heads might not appeal to all, more traditional colors on the Spider Pro cost at least $100 more

Key Features: Excellent distance control across the face

There are two parts to the Odyssey Ai-ONE, the technology, and the application of the technology. Let’s start with the tech, which is found in every Ai-ONE putter in the line.

The putter gets its name from the AI-designed insert. The face might look normal from the outside, but the insert is actually designed with contours behind it which influence ball speed. That’s how Odyssey packs consistent ball speeds in Ai-ONE whether you hit the center or miss on the toe or heel.

I’ve tested the Ai-ONE myself and I can not only confirm Odyssey’s claim on consistent ball speeds across the face, but I’ll add that it feels excellent as well.

At the end of the day, consistent ball speeds means better distance control, and that means fewer three-putts, which we’ve already seen is one huge differentiator between mid-handicap players and better players on the greens.

Here’s the other thing about Ai-ONE putters, you can get them in all shapes, sizes, colors, and profiles. Odyssey offers a blade, wide blade and fang in its new Silver line of Ai-ONE putters, and a 2-Ball, wing back, and more traditional mallets in the original blue and white line. There’s also the Ai-ONE Square-2-Square series, a zero-torque line of Ai-ONE putters. With a robust menu of options, all packed with a face built for excellent distance control and consistency, any player can find an Ai-ONE putter that fits their eye and their stroke.

Pros:

  • Ai face insert provides excellent distance control
  • Color and head style to fit all strokes and preferences
  • Zero torque options available in Square-2-Square line

Cons:

  • Fewer options in the more traditional-looking Silver line

DICK'S SPORTING GOODS
Typical Price: $249
Key Features: SweetFace grooves for category-leading consistency across the face

If you’re looking for consistent distance control, you have to check out Evnroll putters. Every Evnroll putter has the company’s patented face technology, SweetFace Grooves, which ensures consistency across the face, both in distance control and accuracy. SweetFace Grooves – which are thicker in the center and gradually get narrower towards the toe and heel – tighten dispersion by redirecting balls off the toe or heel straighter down the target line. Fewer burnt edges and lip-outs? That sounds nice.

Additionally, the wider grooves in the center create less energy transfer, while the narrower grooves toward the toe and heel create more energy transfer, which makes up for the loss of energy that typically results from missing the sweet spot and results in consistent distances from toe to heel.

I’ve tested a different Evnroll putter and in my experience, having that SweetFace at my fingertips gave a nice boost of confidence standing over the ball, which is always an excellent feeling on the greens.

Given the consistency and accuracy benefits of Evnroll putters, I think they’re a great option for mid-handicappers eager to reduce three putts and make a few more mid-range putts. The Carlsbad model is available in both blade and mallet options, both blacked out from head to grip, at the very reasonable price of $249.

Pros:

  • SweetFace grooves make it forgiving across the face
  • Blacked out design is sleek
  • Heel and toe weights increase MOI

Cons:

  • Available in right-hand only

Sub 70 Sycamore 005 Wide Blade

SHOP SUB 70
Typical Price: $189
Key Features: Wide blade adds forgiveness for players who prefer a blade

Here’s the thing with wide blades: they’re made to appease players who want to use a blade but benefit from the advantages of a mallet. The wider head makes them more forgiving than a traditional blade without sacrificing the blade look that some players simply refuse to give up.

This Sub 70 Sycamore 005 wide blade not only nails the assignment but does so with several extra features, yet still only sets you back $189.

If some extra forgiveness from your putter could help you lower your scores, you have plenty of options with the Sycamore 005. With various shaft and hosel options, you can build your Sycamore 005 with none, some, or more toe hang, or snag a center-shafted version. You can even build it longer and add a counterbalance grip if you want to put one of the hottest putter trends out there right now in your bag.

The head comes with two 15g weights, but you get two 5g, 10g, and 20g weights included with the putter, so you can add or reduce weight to get the exact feel you want.

I’m also personally a big fan of the black head – which reduces glare in addition to looking sleek – and the fact that you can save even more and buy the head only for $140 and assemble the club yourself with either a shaft that you already have, or a shaft and grip that you pick out separately.

Pros:

  • Toe hang and face-balanced options for all stroke types
  • Adjustable head weights included to dial in preferred feel
  • Wide blade provides better forgiveness than traditional blade style putters
  • Available as head-only to save even more and appeal to club-builders

Cons:

  • Left-handed heads are not always available

Here’s an Odyssey putter that’s easy on the eyes, easy on the hands, and easy on the wallet. The 2025 DFX comes with a new look, an appealing charcoal finish that offers no distractions. With an insert that’s 20% softer than the White Hot insert, which is also known for its soft feel, this DFX is perfect for players who like a soft feel to their putter.

Meanwhile, at just $169, you can take $200 to the store, toss this Odyssey putter in the bag and still have money left over for a fresh box of balls.

Improve on the Greens

Everybody wants to make more putts, it isn’t specific to being a mid-handicap golfer. However, at this stage of your game, it’s likely that reducing three-putts is just as important as making more 8-footers.

If you find a putter that you can hit accurately, whether you hit or miss the center, you’ll start making more putts. If you find one you can also control distance with exceptionally well, you’ll three-putt much less. If you can do both, your putting, and your game, just might go to the next level.
